Passport & Visa Requirements

All visitors to South Africa must hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity beyond their intended departure date. Visa requirements vary by nationality, so travellers should verify the latest regulations with their local South African embassy or consulate.

Citizens of many countries—including the United States, Canada, and most European nations—do not require a visa for tourism or business visits of up to 90 days. Travellers who do require a visa should apply well in advance, as processing times and requirements differ by country. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of onward travel (such as a return ticket) and proof of sufficient funds for their stay.

Travel Requirements for Children (Under 18)

Effective 1 June 2015, the South African Department of Home Affairs implemented strict documentation requirements for minors entering or leaving the country.

All travellers under 18 must present:

  • A full/unabridged birth certificate showing the child’s full name and both parents’ details
  • Parents’ passports
  • A valid visa, if applicable

If only one parent is travelling with the child, they must also provide:

  • The child’s unabridged birth certificate
  • An affidavit from the non-travelling parent granting permission
    OR
  • A court order granting the travelling parent full parental responsibility

Failure to present the required documents will result in the child being denied entry or exit.

For full details, consult the official Immigration Laws.

Using Your Debit or Credit Card

If you plan to use your debit/credit card or make wire transfers during your trip, notify your bank beforehand to avoid declined transactions or security holds. Please also ensure your cellphone roaming is on.
